SHCA President Carol A. Wielk disputes the resolution of the tree destruction at the Solomon Schecter site on West Hartsdale Avenue with Supervisor Paul Feiner.  See the following e-mail exchange.

Paul,

I think the Town should keep the $290,000 in escrow and repair the damage to the property. A mere 38 trees will not mitigate the horrendous harm done to the community at large. This is not an issue for just one civic association to address; it affects everyone in the Town and anyone who has to pass through that corridor. Certainly, the members and community of the Secor Homes Civic Association should have an opportunity to comment on this alleged resolution.

I think that Solomon Schecter has disgraced itself. The Town should not allow such devastation to be rewarded by a mere slap on the hand. Additionally, your message regarding the remediation is very vague. How large are the 38 replacement trees? What kind of trees will be planted? What was in the original plan vis-a-vis planting and landscape? These and other questions and concerns should be given a forum for more than just one group to comment on.

I hope this is not a done deal. I would appreciate hearing from you.

Members opposed to housing..... I agree!

POETS CORNER CIVIC ASSOCIATION REACHES AGREEMENT WITH SOLOMON SCHECTER

re: tree plantings. At a meeting last night the members of the association (about l00 were in attendance) approved a mitigation plan for landscaping along W Hartsdale Ave. In addition to all the original elements of the plan approved last year there will be 38 additional evergreen trees, a regrading of the property to improve landscape visibility and an improved stone wall.

This proposal was unanimously approved by l00 members of the Secor Woods Civic Association.

The neighbors made the decision and I respect their recommendations.

I think you mean Poet's Corner Civic Association. To my knowledge, Secor Homes Civic Association was not invited to the meeting. I do not think it is good public policy to abdicate your responsibilities as Supervisor by obtaining the "votes" from a friendly civic association, which is largely controlled by a member of the Town Board. After all, isn't this the type of window dressing that is going on in Washington?

You have an obligation as a Town official to assure that all the residents in Greenburgh are accorded equal access to decision making, particularly if it affects them directly. Letting another developer off the hook by agreeing to a sweetheart deal might make you feel better, but it is hardly reasoned judgment.

This is just another example of the Town cosying up to developers.

I think you're l00% wrong!

I was not involved in the negotiations. l00 residents who live in Poets Corner attended the meeting, heard a presentation and voted to support the agreement.

Government works best when civic associations and officials work together. The people in the neighborhood were looking for a solution to a problem ---not for a fight and the end result will be good for everyone. We will have a beautiful landscaped property.

Paul,

Unfortunately, anyone who may disagree with you is labeled "difficult" or out for a "fight." Government works best when it represents all of the people, and not those handpicked to support a point of view.

Again, this was an issue for the larger community to weigh in on; not just one area. And you <should> have been involved in the negotiations. As our Supervisor, you are the one who is accountable for what happens in Greenburgh.

Anyway, continued discourse on this matter is not fruitful. I will await the "beautiful, landscaped property," and hope that some semblance of the original site can be restored.

I have never said that anyone who disagrees with me is difficult or out for a fight.

And, I never handpicked the l00 people who voted to accept the solution with Solomon Schecter.

The Solomon Schecter process was a partnership from the beginning with the Poets Corner Civic Association. What made this process so successful is that we disagreed with each other at times but all worked together to get the best results possible. And, I'm sure that when the landscaping is complete you'll be impressed with the results.

PAUL FEINER
