Letter
to the Editor: Candidates show contempt for party
In response to your June
8 article, we wish to thank Greenburgh Democratic Chairman Bill Greenawalt
for the courage he showed in speaking out. As the Democratic district
leaders who placed Town Board candidate Francis Sheehan's name in
nomination at the Greenburgh Town Democratic convention, we share Mr.
Greenawalt's ire and indignation.
At its convention a few
weeks ago, Francis Sheehan was officially endorsed, while Timmy Weinberg,
an incumbent, , was not. Typically, the names of all the endorsed townwide
candidates have always appeared on a single "designating
petition." Weinberg, not endorsed, doesn't want to appear on a
petition alone, as others have done to get on the ballot in previous
elections. She wants her name to appear on a petition with her fellow
incumbents.
Supervisor Paul Feiner,
along with fellow incumbents Diana Juettner, councilwoman, and Alfreda
Williams, clerk, already appear on the party's petition of endorsed
candidates, but nevertheless chose
to add their names to Weinberg's petition so that it would appear more
official. This creates confusion for the average petition-signer by making
it difficult to discern the party's endorsed slate from this other one. By
disregarding the party's choice of candidates, these four individuals have
chosen to ignore the vote of the convention and have thereby undermined
its value. They are showing contempt for the district leaders who have
worked so hard for them in the past. They are choosing loyalty to one
another over loyalty to the party responsible for their election to public
office.
We join Mr. Greenawalt in
his condemnation of their "rogue petition."
